“What’s wrong with the Female Gaming Community”
Exams are around the corner. Even if I wanted to plug in my Xbox and start hitting away on the controller, I mustn’t, no way! Updating content on my numerous have-to-be-updated blogs and such, is taking far too much time as it is.
That said, it’s the first day of the month. Ideally an update here is called for. And for that, I shall. Even if it isn’t going to be a full fledged review of a game or an introductory piece to play one.
Now, we all know that women these days tend to play just as much games as the men. Perhaps the selection of games differ but generally, we do play and a lot in fact. I know that for a fact cause my best friend is one major addict. The amount of time she spends playing games is perhaps the same amount of time I spend wasting my life away in front of my TV. Come to think of it, it’s through gaming that we became friends. Anyway.
I’m a bit fan of The Girl Gamer these days. It’s a blog written by a female gamer, Christina “Faith” Winterburn. While writing this entry, my mind was completely blank, so I did a quick search through her blog and well stumbled upon an entry she wrote, dated back in November 2006.
The entry titled, “What’s wrong with the Female Gaming Community”. It basically gives an insider’s take to what she thinks and feels about herself as a gamer and well… the female gaming community.
In the entry, Faith stated that she started gaming when she was 6. Her Dad was the one who introduced her to computer games on his Commodore 64 and she had grown to love gaming ever since. She says, “During that time, the video game industry did not market to women or girls and yet I still chose to play video games. I didn’t care if they marketed the games to me, because I wanted to play just the same. I didn’t care if they were made for women or not.”
She made quite a number of interesting points about how companies try to market games to the female population, how female gamers demand equality in the industry yet destroy any chance of being taken seriously by flip flopping on how we want to be treated, and etc. Many points she wrote made tons of sense. And while reading I felt a guilt and the need to really evaluate and reflect.
It’s an interesting piece really – totally read worthy. So… yeah. For my first entry of the month, instead of reviewing or introducing a game, I’m gonna introduce you to a gamer and a piece she wrote that you should read: What’s wrong with the Female Gaming Community.

Thanks for the post, Miuki. I wrote that post a long time ago and not a lot of female gamers agree with me on it. I actually upset a lot of the female community with it. I posted it on Destructoid.com too and that’s where the flame war started.
But I still agree. When most companies market to us, they fail … badly and we just get mad. So really why bother to have them market to us at all. They never did before and we still played games.
You’re website looks very good, it was a pleasure to be on you’re. Keep on the good work
