The new PSP (to) Go?

Making my way, while dragging “him” out of the game console shop, wasn’t an easy task. But what had to be done, had to be. “He” was just too eager to get a new portal device to go gaga over and I on the other hand know he could live without one. Furthermore, while passing the shop, I heard someone say that there was gonna be a new PSP on the block. So why get the old if the new is on its way?

And it seems it’s not just something I randomly heard. The fact is there is gonna be a PSP upgrade – the Sony PSP Go (model PSP N1000)!

Word has it that it is scheduled for release on October 1st, 2009 in American and European territories, and on November 1st, 2009 in Japan. It was revealed prior to E3 2009 through Sony’s Qore VOD service.

The design is significantly different from the other PSPs mainly because it is not intended to be a replacement – Sony will continue to manufacture, sell, and support the PSP 3000. (Ooops, that is not good news on my end.)

The new improved PSP Go does not feature a UMD drive, instead it has 16GB of internal flash memory to store games, video, and other media. This can be extended by up to 32GB with the use of a Memory Stick Micro (M2) flash card.

Unlike previous PSP models, the PSP Go’s rechargeable battery is not removable or replaceable by the user. It kinda reminds you of how Apple does things doesn’t it?

Anyway, the unit is supposedly 43% lighter and 56% smaller than the original PSP-1000, and 16% lighter and 35% smaller than the PSP-3000. It has a 3.8-inch 480×272 LCD (compared to the larger 4.3-inch 480×272 pixel LCD on previous PSP models). The screen slides up to reveal the main controls. And the overall shape and sliding mechanism are similar to that of Sony’s mylo COM-2 internet device.

In conclusion, maybe I should let “him” get the PSP after all…
